Community Recs Post!

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fics/fanvids/fancrafts/fanart/podfics/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here

Daily Happiness

1. We had a nice dinner at Disneyland tonight. The parks were crowded, but it's finally feeling like fall weather, so that made it more pleasant than hot and crowded for sure.

2. Speaking of weather, it rained for a few more hours last night after I went to bed. It doesn't look like we're supposed to get any more in the near future, but I'm glad we got as much as we did.

3. Yesterday at work I saw this sweet potato spread and meant to buy it before going home, but forgot. But today I remembered, and I had a piece of toast tonight with butter and the spread and it was so good! It's not like a sweet potato jam, it's a creamy spread more like peanut butter. The package says you can also spread it on before toasting to give it a real roasted sweet potato feel, so I'm going to try that next.

4. I'm taking the day off tomorrow. On Monday a check engine light went on in the car, no accompanying beeps or message, so it didn't seem urgent, but it did stay on, so Carla called and made an appointment to take it in to the dealership. She's been wanting to get a tune up anyway, and there's some sort of recall that should be looked into as well. The appointment is for tomorrow, and I just decided that even though we have another car I could use, and it's not me taking the car in, work doesn't have to know that, so I put in a PTO request and told my boss I have to take the car to the shop, so I can't come in. (Now today the check engine light was off, but it does still need to get checked out, so we're keeping the appointment.)

5. Look at that leg!

2025 Disneyland Trip #67 (10/15/25)

We went down to Disneyland this evening after work. It was windy when we got there, and getting a little chilly, so we both wore sweatshirts, which was nice. I'm sure there will be some hot days here and there still, but I hate how warm it is into October these days, so it's nice to have it actually feeling like fall.

The New Gods #11 (2024-) is fighting with New Gods.

Not with the Nyctari, those who took Darkseid's passing as their opportunity to take Apokolips and New Genesis - but between themselves.

There's a prophesied child rooted in the same history as the Nyctari, whom some figure an intended vessel for Darkseid as he is now.

Desaad of Apokolips, with Metron's human pawn Maxwell Lord, has taken the child - Orion and Scott Free following.

The setup's even. )

spinach and ricotta gnudi

Posted by deb

Although spinach gnudi — soft, pillowy cheese dumplings fried in browned butter and sage — are traditionally more of a spring or summer food, I’m here to make the argument we should eat them right now, in prime soup-and-sweater weather. Because did you hear the part about warm cheese? the puddle of brown butter? the earthy sage? It’s a symphony of delicious fall things and if you tell me you don’t want to curl up on the plate and take a nap in it, fine, I’ll believe you but I do think you’re in denial.

spinach and ricotta gnudi-03

Gnudi literally means “naked” in Italian — consider them spinach and ricotta ravioli without the pasta wrapper. I think they’re better in every way because you get all of the soft, cheesy filling, none of the pasta fuss that can feel leaden together. Typically, gnudi are made with fresh greens that have been blanched and finely chopped but I’ve been on a mission over the last year to give frozen spinach (reliable! economical! seasonless!) more love, especially when all I’d planned to do with the fresh stuff was cook it down and feel bereft when it vanished. Frozen spinach saves me this heartache, and here we’re using a whole box, saving us a math headache too.

Severed #1

"When we set out to write this book, our goal was to conjure up the deep fright that you have as a kid, the kind that takes your breath away, makes your spine tingle... A primal fear. We thought of classic fairytales—the ones where you're lost in the woods, and something is out there that wants—no, needs—to devour you. And we thought... how could this be scarier? Well, what if it was rooted in reality? You'd be surprised by how many people over the years have scoured the country looking for children to consume... how many real Big Bad Wolves exist." -- Scott Snyder

The Raven Boys: The Graphic Novel, by Stephanie Williams

The Raven Boys: The Graphic Novel, adapted from Maggie Stiefvater's book by Stephanie Williams, illustrated by Sas Milledge with colors by Abel Ko:

The dialogue in this adaptation is faithful to the novel, but perhaps too faithful. I think Williams missed an opportunity to take some of the novel's internal reflection and transform it into dialogue. Like it would have been easy, and told us a lot about both of them, to have Blue lean over to a coworker and mutter, "Check out President Cellphone," when Gansey first walks into Nino's.

That means this is missing a lot of the character work that you get in the novel, like Gansey's utter devotion to the Pig (which I don't think is ever called by name here?). Blue's initial disgust for Gansey also seems much weaker. Oddly, 300 Fox Way is exactly as empty as the novel makes it, with only the three main psychics, and Blue and Calla (briefly) present on the page. That's one thing that would have been easy to show in this visual format, just fill the panels with all those aunts and cousins Blue swears are in the house but who never seem to impact much of anything except the state of the kitchen sink. (Don't tell me the house is crowded and then not show me constant fighting over who gets to use the bathroom. This bothers me every time I read the book.)(Though this does fix Blue's age to match the rest of the series, and I can't tell you how happy I was that her explanation to Adam got cut off before she could say "young.")

As an adaptation, it feels watered down, and I can't judge it as a standalone graphic novel because I've read the book so many times I brought all that with me and also missed the things it left out. Like Gansey's Topsiders, and Blue's weird clothes, and Adam's Coke shirt. Not that any of these things are important on their own, but they tell us something about the characters. That Gansey looks like he came out of a yachting magazine and has about the same amount of understanding about the real world as if he did, and how Blue's punk do-it-yourself ethos applies not just to her clothing and her room, but her approach to life, and that for the psychics, Adam, in that crowd of Raven Boys, is at first only as memorable as the slogan on his t-shirt. The detailed artwork is gorgeous, however, especially the lush colors of Cabeswater, and Ronan's back tattoo is fucking amazing, and I support the decision to make Blue and her family Hispanic because this is a very white story otherwise.

So for me, this is a nice effort, and a pleasant read, and it gets a lot right, but mostly it just made me want to read the book again, as, inevitably, all graphic novel adaptations do. But it might be perfect for reluctant readers or those who prefer graphic novels.

Contains: child abuse and domestic violence; wasps; reference to past suicide attempt; the text is small, thin, and faint enough that it's difficult to read in print.

Two letters to Carolyn about terrible parents

1. Hi, Carolyn: I grew up in a very image-conscious family. I’ve always been “bigger,” which bothered my parents a lot. They were always on my case to lose weight, although it wasn’t having health impacts and I don’t have issues with physical fitness. Now that Ozempic is a thing, they have been dropping hints about that, too. I’ve tried gently having conversations about how their comments are hurtful, but they — especially my mom — get hostile and tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about. (They aren’t great at emotional discussions.)

I love myself generally and think I’m a cool person. But I’m in my early 30s, and I’ve never been in a relationship. I really don’t get romantic attention. I’ve been on a handful of dates from apps. This is hard. I naturally wonder whether my weight is the problem. But I can’t bear the idea that my parents were right this whole time, and I don’t want to hear the inevitable I-told-you-so’s if I do end up trying Ozempic.

I know a reasoned conversation isn’t going to stop them. And I know internally it’s going to kill me if I lose weight and start getting more attention; were they right and I was really that ugly this entire time? I have no idea how to wrap my mind around this problem. I’ve had a string of really unhelpful therapists, generally saying, “You’re not ugly, but you need years of therapy to heal ALL your childhood trauma and then maybe you’ll be able to find a relationship!” and I need a break from that.

Do you have any advice?

************

2. Dear Carolyn: My sister and I had a really difficult childhood, but she definitely had it tougher than I did. For very good reasons, she severed all ties with our mom over 20 years ago, and, based on the way things happened, her daughters also chose to sever all ties with their grandmother.

My sister and I also were estranged for many years, but about six years ago, we rebuilt our relationship from the ground up and we are the best of friends now. That is, until Mom died a few weeks ago. My mom left her home and its contents to me. She was very clear on her wishes that I sell the home and split the money between my two children. It will be a significant amount of money. She left my sister a third of all remaining assets, which are minimal.

My sister is livid about the terms of the will, feeling like it was just another way to send her a message that she didn’t matter to our mom. I don’t know what Mom was thinking. If memory serves, she didn’t want to leave my sister entirely out of the will, but this has actually turned out to be worse.

This whole legal journey through probate is going to just keep taking my sister back to a past with ugly memories and lots of pain. How do I navigate this and keep my relationship with her? Do I reconsider how to allocate the money from the house to make things more fair — but go against my mom’s specific wishes?
